Fit & Able's newest race to support our favorite friends! There was such good turnout for Mutts & Marshmallows that we wanted to have another dog-friendly event in the Triangle to support Second Chance Pet Adoptions.
Second Chance Pet Adoptions is the oldest no-kill animal rescue organization in the Triangle region of North Carolina, established in 1987 by three women—Cheri, Judy, and Deborah—who began rescuing stray and abandoned cats and dogs in their own homes. As of February 2021, over 15,000 lives have been saved by our staff and volunteers. Today, Second Chance operates out of a facility that holds 120 animals and welcomes over 3,500 visitors per year. Second Chance makes a lifetime commitment to our animals and will always welcome back a returned pet.
In addition to their rescue programs, three special programs uniquely position Second Chance to combat animal homelessness in the greater Raleigh area: Heeling Hearts that treats dozens of dogs each year whose hearts are big, but broken, to cure them of heartworm disease and list them for adoption; Hearts to Home to partner with emptier shelters in northern states to identify at-risk dogs in local shelters to place them into temporary foster homes and then drive them up north with the help of volunteers; and Kitty Clip to help reduce the population of homeless cats and increase the health of unaltered cats (stray or owned), Second Chance funds the spay/neuter surgeries of cats belonging to or cared for by residents of Wake County, who pay just $5 per cat for the procedure.
Second Chance Pet Adoptions receives no government funding; as such, all of these programs are enabled by the generous support of the community. With your help, every animal can get a second chance to find love! You can learn more about Second Chance Pet Adoption's great work here: https://www.secondchancenc.org/
Fit & Able loves family fitness and whose four-legged furry friend isn't part of the family? Dog owners are welcome to run with their pups in the Doggie Dash! For only $10 per pup it will be happy trails for both runners and their dogs. AND, the full $10 dog fee goes to support Second Chance Pet Adoptions! Dogs are now welcome to participate with their owners in both the 5K and 6.5 Mile races; there's no longer a separate event just for dogs. Now the whole family can run together!
PLEASE NOTE: only one dog per registered runner and you MUST register your dog for them to run with you. The race will be more fun with the whole family there and you'll be supporting a great organization in our community!
All runners 5K and 6.5 Mile runners will also get a Pups & Pastries shirt and finishers medal (if registered by September 2nd). Virtual race participants have the option for their packets to be shipped or retrieved at a curbside pickup after the event.
